EDUCATION AND
OUTREACH:
Overview:
ESWNU
is involved in several on campus and off campus education and
outreach programs. Our main work has been developing and piloting a
two-day program for a sixth grade science classroom. We implement
this program at Chute Middle School in Evanston every spring by ESW
members. The aim of the curriculum is to expose middle school
students to the basic concepts of sustainability and
environmentalism in an interesting and engaging manner. The program
is always in development, striving to improve each
year.
Other
projects include seminars and workshops during events like Career
Day for Girls, firesides in dorms to promote sustainable lifestyles
on campus during Green Cup season.
Design:
The 2009 Spring Chute two day
program covers "the science of climate change presentation," "happy
Earth/sad Earth interactive game," "5 minute topic discussions at
different stations," "wind and solar power," "rising sea levels,"
"everyday actions" and much more!
Timeline:
In
the coming year, we are looking to expand and modify the Chute
program based on feedback from participants and the science teacher
at Chute. We are also very interested in opportunities at other
schools, organizations, and events on and off campus to do
workshops or presentations to promote sustainability.
