The IEMS Undergraduate Mentoring Program is an initiative spearheaded by the Northwestern IIE student chapter to establish a stronger sense of community among undergraduates, as well as provide them with an additional resource for navigating life at Northwestern as an IE major. The program proposes that each faculty advisor be paired with a student mentor. The student mentors are all upperclassmen who have experience with the department in various capacities.
It is important to note that the Mentoring Program should not be a burden for faculty members, and should not put an additional load on them. The goal is to give advisees an additional resource. This resource should be seen strictly as a complement to faculty advising, and not as a supplement or a replacement. To that end, student mentors will not advise on official curriculum matters. The idea is that student mentors will be able to give undergraduates advice from a student perspective. This perspective will include such things as tips for balancing coursework with extracurricular activities, ideas for how to get more involved with the department, suggestions for courses to fill theme requirement.
