PHILIPPINES PROJECT

Overview:

The ESW team of 5 undergradruate students and 2 CEE graduate students are collaborating with two NGO partners, Green Empowerment and Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. (AIDFI), to install an improved ram pump system in the Philippines June 2010. Although AIDFI has had 17 years of experience with ram pumps, their work has been largely practical and hands-on, with little to no theoretical work. By using computer modeling and wet lab tests, Northwestern students can provide an important aspect that has been missing in previous work. Our goal is to create an overall more efficient pump design as well as to address a specific mechanical problem with the waste valve. AIDFI will send an incomplete pump body to NU where students can conduct testing and finish the construction according to an original design. This project is innovative that the majority of design and testing will take place at NU, giving students the opportunity to learn outside the classroom and share their experience with others through outreach and education events.
